W.E.B has sold the Ariano wind farm in Italy to Enel, transferring 20 turbines totalling 84 MW of operating capacity. The Austrian developer has stated that the future route to market for the power was central to the decision, and that proceeds will fund three Weinviertel wind projects in Austria totalling 143 MW, the 112 MW Sugar Maple wind farm in Canada, and the Rašnice and Břežany wind farms in the Czech Republic totalling 64 MW. W.E.B has been explicit that project sales remain the exception rather than the model. The price explains why this one was not.

That figure sits near the very top of the Italian market. Enerdatics' benchmark for Italian operating wind asset transactions since the start of 2023 puts the median implied enterprise value at $1.19 million per MW, within an interquartile range of $0.84 million to $2.19 million, measured across seven priced deals from an eleven-transaction slice carrying $934.55 million of value. Ariano was therefore sold at roughly 80 percent above the median and just inside the upper quartile boundary, against a full range for the segment topping out at $2.45 million per MW.
Merchant exposure means the electricity is sold at prevailing wholesale prices rather than under a fixed-price contract, a feed-in tariff or a contract for difference. The owner captures the upside when prices are high and absorbs the downside when they are not. In Italy that downside has grown more pronounced, because heavy midday solar output has compressed capture prices and introduced periods of very low or negative pricing. Managing that exposure is a trading capability rather than an asset management one, requiring hedging, portfolio balancing and a sizeable customer or supply book to net against. A pure developer-operator with a single 84 MW Italian position has none of those advantages. A large integrated utility does, which is why the same asset is genuinely worth more inside Enel's portfolio than inside W.E.B's.
Because its own analysis concluded the risk exceeded its appetite. The company has said that marketing a wind farm of this scale on a free-market basis would have opened the possibility of higher revenues while carrying materially higher price risk, and that Enel offered attractive commercialisation options for the asset. That is a candid statement of comparative advantage rather than a distressed exit. The proceeds are being redeployed across 319 MW of new projects in three countries, close to four times the capacity sold, which reflects the price achieved and the fact that development-stage capacity costs far less per MW than an operating asset. W.E.B has stated that development, construction and long-term operation of its own wind and solar plants remain the core business.

Alongside those, Enerdatics logs three Enel acquisitions in 2026 alone: 829 MW of operating US solar from Excelsior Energy Capital for $1.3 billion at $1.57 million per MW in February, 270 MW of operating US solar from Dominion Energy for $180 million at $0.67 million per MW in May, and now Ariano. Every one is an operating asset, and Ariano is the most expensive per MW of the three.
The deal signals that Italian operating wind is being repriced by who can market the power, not by what the turbines produce. Ariano is a mature asset with no contract attached, and it cleared near the top of the range because the buyer holds a trading and supply platform that converts merchant volatility into manageable exposure. Enerdatics records only 30 Italian wind transactions since the start of 2023, with Alerion Clean Power and PLT energia each completing three and almost every other buyer appearing once, so there is no deep field of bidders able to pay this level. Expect independent developers holding uncontracted Italian wind to test the market on the same logic, and expect the spread between what a utility pays and what a financial buyer pays to stay wide while capture prices remain under pressure.
The recycling matters as much as the sale. Turning one 84 MW Italian operating position into 319 MW of development across Austria, Canada and the Czech Republic is a capital-efficiency trade rather than a retreat, and it moves W.E.B's exposure towards markets and stages where it holds an edge. The company built Ariano and ran it; what it could not do was sell the output as well as an integrated utility can. Recognising that distinction and acting on it, once, is what active portfolio management actually looks like.
