Sol Systems Buys 330 MW Wolf Creek Solar Project in Illinois

Sol Systems has acquired the 330 MWdc Wolf Creek Renewable Energy Center in Saline County, Illinois, from US Solar. The utility-scale solar project was advanced through early development by US Solar, including land acquisition, permitting, and grid interconnection work.

The key signal is consolidation around execution capability in complex project sites. Wolf Creek sits on historic subsurface mine land and lies just five miles from Sol’s 342 MWdc Eldorado Solar Project, another brownfield development in the region.

That proximity matters commercially. By clustering projects near existing developments, Sol can reuse local workforce relationships, permitting familiarity, and community engagement structures, lowering execution risk as the asset moves toward construction.

Deals like this show how developers monetize projects once they clear the most uncertain stages. US Solar advanced Wolf Creek through early milestones, including securing a conditional land use permit in September 2024, before transferring the project to a buyer with stronger construction and ownership capabilities.

The transaction also reflects growing investor interest in repurposed industrial land for solar development, where experienced developers can navigate permitting and geotechnical challenges more efficiently than new entrants.
