What does it take to drive a country toward a fossil-free energy future? In Sweden, it takes strategic acquisitions like this one: OX2 has officially acquired the 238 MW Fagerasen wind project from joint developers DalaVind and Eolus. With operations slated to begin by early 2028, this deal strengthens OX2’s presence in the high-demand SE3 electricity zone and pushes Sweden closer to its green energy goals.
Here’s how this acquisition signals a major move for Sweden’s renewable energy sector — and what it means for OX2’s growing clean power empire.
Strategic growth in a critical energy zone
The Fagerasen wind project is located in Sweden’s Malung-Sälen municipality in the Dalarna region and includes 34 turbines spread across five sub-areas. Expected to generate around 700 GWh annually — enough to power approximately 130,000 homes — this asset boosts capacity in SE3, a zone already experiencing rising electricity demand.
OX2’s focus on SE3 isn’t new. The company has been steadily expanding in this region through earlier projects near Ornsköldsvik and Eskilstuna. With the Fagerasen acquisition, they cement their footprint in a key area while ensuring grid resilience by integrating a new transformer station in Tando for better connectivity across northern Dalarna.
A well-rounded project rooted in local collaboration
The Fagerasen project’s development journey reflects a unique blend of local engagement and expert execution. DalaVind, with its deep roots in the Dalarna region, led efforts around land agreements and local community involvement. Eolus brought in technical precision and project development leadership to transform ideas into tangible infrastructure.
Established as a 51-49 joint venture in 2022 under the company DalaVind Fagervind, the project has now reached late-stage development, having secured all necessary permits. While the deal value remains undisclosed, Eolus received an initial payment of approximately $0.69 million for its share, with additional payouts contingent upon regulatory milestones and OX2’s final investment decision.
Impacts beyond megawatts and turbines
Beyond its generation capacity, Fagerasen is a symbol of Sweden’s proactive approach to renewable energy leadership. The project will enhance grid stability, improve energy access in regional areas, and contribute substantially to fossil-free electricity production. For OX2, it affirms their position not just as a developer, but as a long-term operator with a vision for sustainable infrastructure investment.
As we watch the clean energy landscape evolve, one thing is clear: projects like Fagerasen are not just about powering homes — they’re about powering change.
