Naturgy has secured a substantial $45.75 million grant from Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge under the ERDF 2021 to 2027 framework. Awarded through the first call for innovative energy storage projects, this funding highlights how battery energy storage systems are now viewed as critical infrastructure rather than optional upgrades. With Spain rapidly expanding solar and wind capacity, grid flexibility has become essential. Battery storage helps balance intermittency, stabilize supply, and reduce reliance on fossil fueled backup generation. The grant will directly support the development and construction of seven innovative battery energy storage projects totaling 100 MW and 359 MWh. These assets are strategically distributed across the Canary Islands, Castile and Leon, Castile La Mancha, Galicia, Murcia, and Vigo, ensuring regional diversity and grid resilience. Six of the projects are hybrid renewable and battery facilities, allowing excess renewable power to be stored and dispatched when demand peaks. One standalone battery project will connect directly to the grid, offering flexibility services such as frequency regulation and peak shaving. Together, these assets position Naturgy as a leader in advanced storage deployment across Spain.
