SWM has signed an MoU with Infener AG to invest in a decentralised green hydrogen hub in Neumuenster, Schleswig-Holstein. The project could produce up to 5,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually and will connect to the local high-voltage grid through TenneT and Schleswig-Holstein Netz.
The signal is clear: Germany green hydrogen M&A is moving from speculative hydrogen pipelines to local infrastructure that solves grid congestion. Schleswig-Holstein curtailed 812 GWh of renewable power in 2024, costing EUR 78.4mn in redispatch. Electrolysers can absorb that surplus and convert it into fuel for regional industry and transport.
For SWM, the deal is a pilot investment across the hydrogen value chain. The municipal utility is already active in hydrogen transport and is now evaluating production exposure. This mirrors Europe’s broader shift toward grid-connected, policy-supported clean energy assets, where investors are prioritising infrastructure that improves system flexibility and revenue visibility.
Infener is building a wider German hub model, with projects also planned in Gengenbach and Villingen-Schwenningen. Its portfolio includes seven projects totalling more than 295 MW across Germany, Portugal, and Norway.
