In a landmark move for Australia’s clean energy transition, AMPYR Australia — a subsidiary of AMPYR Energy — announced on November 12, 2025, its agreement to acquire the Northern Battery Project from Green Gold Energy. Set at the historic site of the former Northern Power Station in Port Augusta, South Australia, this acquisition represents a major step toward building a resilient, renewable-powered future for the region.
The Northern Battery, formerly known as the Davenport BESS, marks a symbolic transformation of one of South Australia’s key fossil-fuel sites into a cornerstone of the clean energy era. With a planned capacity of 270 MW and up to 8 hours of storage (2,160 MWh), the utility-scale battery will become one of the most significant grid-forming energy storage systems in Australia. By leveraging the existing substation infrastructure at Port Augusta, the project not only reduces environmental and community impact but also optimizes cost efficiency. Once operational, the Northern Battery will be capable of supplying renewable energy to around 300,000 homes — a vital contribution to South Australia’s energy independence and reliability.
Under the acquisition terms, Green Gold Energy — which initiated development in 2023 — will continue to support AMPYR through the project’s late-stage development. Beyond its technical merits, the Northern Battery exemplifies AMPYR’s holistic approach to energy transformation — one that prioritizes collaboration, innovation, and social value. The company is engaging closely with the Port Augusta community to generate local employment and business opportunities while establishing a $40,000 Community Benefit Fund to back grassroots initiatives. Importantly, AMPYR has partnered with the Nukunu Traditional Owners to ensure that the project delivers meaningful cultural, social, and economic outcomes for First Nations communities.
AMPYR’s acquisition aligns with its ambitious goal to deliver 6 GWh of operational battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Australia by 2030, meeting an estimated 10–20% of the country’s future energy storage demand. Once construction begins in 2026, the Northern Battery will play a pivotal role in stabilizing the South Australian grid, reducing renewable energy curtailment, and enhancing system resilience. The stored power will be traded through Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM), enabling the integration of solar and wind energy at unprecedented levels. This project is not merely about capacity — it’s about enabling Australia’s transition to a clean, reliable, and sustainable energy ecosystem.
AMPYR Australia’s acquisition of the Northern Battery project marks a defining moment in the nation’s renewable energy journey. By revitalizing the former Northern Power Station into a state-of-the-art energy storage hub, AMPYR is bridging Australia’s past and future — driving decarbonization, empowering communities, and solidifying its leadership in large-scale energy storage.
