Amazon Web Services (AWS) has once again underscored its commitment to Ohio’s growing tech ecosystem with the opening of two new data centers in New Albany. As part of a sweeping $3.5 billion investment announced in 2023, AWS is transforming Central Ohio into a critical node in its global cloud infrastructure. With 56 data centers already operational or planned in the state, this latest development is not just about digital growth—it’s about community, innovation, and long-term economic impact. Here's how AWS is reshaping the data landscape while investing in Ohio's future.
New Albany: The Epicenter of AWS’s Midwest Cloud Expansion
With the completion of two data centers covering 1.25 million square feet, AWS has taken a major step in executing its $3.5 billion investment in Licking County. These new facilities are just the beginning—constructed on a portion of the 439 acres AWS acquired in 2023, they represent phase one of five in New Albany. This expansion builds on a previous $6.2 billion AWS invested in the area between 2015 and 2024. Across Ohio, the company’s total infrastructure investment now exceeds $19.7 billion. New Albany has emerged as a strategic hub thanks to its robust talent pool, forward-thinking local leadership, and strong utility partnerships, such as with AEP Ohio.
Strategic Partnerships Fueling a Thriving Tech Ecosystem
Amazon’s growth in Ohio isn’t happening in isolation—it's part of a larger collaboration with cities and communities. AWS’s Vice President of Economic Development, Roger Wehner, praised local officials for their problem-solving approach and vision, which have helped overcome challenges and maintain project momentum. With additional agreements like the $1 billion Marysville investment by 2030, AWS is clearly embedding itself deep into Ohio’s digital infrastructure planning. The company's decision to continue expanding here—despite competing opportunities across the country—shows the strength and reliability of Ohio's evolving tech environment.
Beyond Infrastructure: Investing in Community and STEM Futures
AWS’s presence in New Albany goes beyond servers and cloud services. The company has contributed $200,000 to the new community fieldhouse and is creating an Amazon Think Big Space to inspire students through hands-on STEM learning. It also launched a $100,000 local grant program to support schools, nonprofits, and organizations focused on sustainability, skills training, and social impact in Franklin and Licking counties. These initiatives reflect Amazon’s broader mission to give back to the communities that host its infrastructure, ensuring its growth supports educational access and long-term regional development.
With two new data centers now operational and billions more committed through 2030, Amazon Web Services is not just building digital infrastructure in Ohio—it’s laying the foundation for a more connected, skilled, and resilient future.
