KKR and IGNIS have agreed to set up IGNIS P2X, a company that will develop green hydrogen, ammonia and other fuels made with renewable power in Spain. KKR will commit up to $428.7 million. Spain has never been short of hydrogen partnerships. What it has been short of is anyone attaching a price to one.
Key takeaways
- KKR announced on 25 June 2024 a partnership with IGNIS to create IGNIS P2X, a platform to develop green hydrogen, ammonia, e-methanol, e-fuels and sustainable aviation fuel production plants in Spain.
- Under the IGNIS P2X joint venture agreement, KKR will provide up to $428.7 million to develop and build future projects, and KKR and IGNIS will each own 50% of the platform when it launches.
- IGNIS P2X will start with a pipeline of Power-to-X and renewable projects totalling about 20 GW in Spain and other selected countries, and will oversee more than 10 GW of advanced and early-stage renewables in Spain.
- IGNIS, KKR's partner in IGNIS P2X, manages around 6.6 GW of power assets and has a development portfolio of more than 300 renewable projects in ten countries.
- Enerdatics records 18 hydrogen M&A transactions in Spain announced between January 2023 and June 2025, of which 17 are joint ventures and only one carries a disclosed value.
What is IGNIS P2X?
It is a development company for Power-to-X projects, owned equally by KKR and IGNIS. Power-to-X is the umbrella term for using renewable electricity to make something other than power: hydrogen by splitting water, and then fuels and chemicals built from that hydrogen, such as ammonia and e-methanol.
The product list is broad. IGNIS P2X will focus on plants producing green hydrogen, ammonia, e-methanol, e-fuels and sustainable aviation fuel, known as SAF. The projects will be located near large industrial complexes, and the stated aim is to help decarbonise refining, steel, chemicals and fertilisers.
The platform does not start from nothing. It begins with a pipeline of Power-to-X and renewable projects totalling about 20 GW in Spain and other selected countries. It will also oversee more than 10 GW of advanced and early-stage renewable projects in Spain, as well as renewable projects in other countries. Uria Menendez and Clifford Chance acted as legal advisors to the joint venture.
What is KKR's $428.7 million actually for?
It is a funding commitment, not a purchase price. KKR will provide up to $428.7 million to develop and build future projects. No company or asset changed hands for that sum, and Leap records no deal value for the partnership.
The distinction matters for anyone trying to value the business. A purchase price says what a buyer paid for something that already exists. A commitment of up to a stated amount says how much one partner is prepared to put into projects that do not yet exist. The words "up to" also matter: they set a ceiling on KKR's contribution, not a sum already paid.
The structure is a familiar one. One partner brings the money, the other brings projects and the ability to develop them, and each ends up with half. For KKR, the partnership reflects a strategy of investing in the energy transition with a focus on industrial decarbonisation through advanced green technologies.
Why combine hydrogen with a renewables pipeline?
Because green hydrogen is only as green as the power that makes it. Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced by electrolysis, splitting water with electricity, using power from renewable sources.
A Power-to-X developer that controls its own wind and solar pipeline can, in principle, plan the generation and the fuel plant together. That is the logic of putting more than 10 GW of Spanish renewables under the same platform as the hydrogen projects. It also gives the partnership something to build and sell even if individual fuel projects take longer than planned.
Enerdatics records 18 hydrogen M&A transactions in Spain announced between January 2023 and June 2025. Seventeen are joint ventures with no disclosed value. The only priced deal is corporate: RMG Acquisition Corp III's proposed business combination with H2B2, valued at $750 million, announced in May 2023. The timing is as telling as the structure. Fourteen of the 18 were announced in 2023, including three tied to the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley in January and February of that year: Enagas, Alter Enersun and Cepsa; EDP and Cepsa for a 1 GW plant; and Cepsa and Fertiberia for another 1 GW. Only four followed in 2024, and Enerdatics records none in the first half of 2025. KKR and IGNIS signed on 25 June 2024. Two days later Renewco Power and INDHO set up Indhyco to develop 1 GW of green hydrogen projects in Spain, and in July Enagas Renovable and Verbund agreed to develop green hydrogen projects together.
What does the deal signal for Spanish hydrogen?
It signals a change in who is backing the sector and how. The 2023 wave was mostly partnerships between energy companies, often with industrial users alongside. IGNIS P2X brings in a large financial investor with a stated capital commitment, attached to a developer that already has a renewables business to fall back on.
KKR's other European renewables deals show the same appetite for scale. Around the same time it agreed to buy about 61 percent of Greenvolt and offered Encavis shareholders a 54 percent premium. IGNIS P2X is a different kind of bet: a commitment to build rather than an acquisition of operating assets.
It also signals how thin the pricing evidence remains. With one priced deal in 18, there is no market benchmark for what a Spanish hydrogen development platform is worth. Hydrogen financings have carried clearer numbers than hydrogen projects, as Sunfire's electrolyser factory funding showed. Until projects reach a final investment decision and someone pays for a stake, commitments like KKR's will remain the nearest thing to a price signal.
