NSW Battery Storage M&A Targets Consented Coal-Replacement Assets
May 20, 2026
3 min read

Enervest acquired the 300 MW Northern Border BESS project in New South Wales from an unnamed Sydney-based developer in May 2026. The project has secured state development approval and will connect to the Dumaresq substation near the Queensland border. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal shows a clear shift in Australia BESS M&A toward consented, grid-advanced assets. Buyers are paying for development certainty, not just capacity. Northern Border is not operational, but it has moved beyond early-stage risk, with planning approval secured and AEMO connection work advancing.

Enervest is a private developer using an own-and-operate strategy. Its acquisition follows its earlier partnership with Octopus Australia to acquire rights to the 1.2 GW Hanworth BESS in New South Wales. That pattern shows developers scaling storage portfolios around large grid nodes.

Enerdatics’ Q3 2025 M&A analysis showed Australia remained APAC’s bright spot, with PE-led and developer-led activity across solar, wind, and storage. BESS activity in APAC stayed consistent at around 500 MW during Q3, while Australia attracted buyers such as AMPYR Energy and Ace Power for de-risked two-to-four-hour systems.

The commercial driver is coal replacement. Northern Border is positioned ahead of the planned Eraring coal closure in April 2029, giving the asset capacity value, flexibility revenue potential, and strategic location relevance.

Australia BESS M&A will likely keep favoring consented, grid-connected, and coal-replacement-linked projects over speculative pipelines.
