How does a nation fast-track its transition to reliable, large-scale clean energy One of the clearest paths is bold investment backed by global financial leaders. Generadora Metropolitana has taken exactly that step by securing a major debt financing package to build the transformative Dune Plus portfolio in Chile. This milestone marks a pivotal moment for the country’s renewable expansion, particularly in energy storage and solar integration.

Generadora Metropolitana—jointly owned by AME and EDF Power Solutions Chile—has closed a significant non-recourse project financing structure to advance the Dune Plus portfolio. The facility includes a term loan, associated guarantees, and an additional VAT loan provided by Banco de Credito e Inversiones. This collaboration brought together an international consortium of lenders including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, MUFG Bank, Société Générale, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. The sophisticated financing design not only signals lender confidence but also positions the project as one of Chile’s most notable clean-energy builds to date.

The Dune Plus portfolio combines large-scale solar generation with advanced battery energy storage, reflecting a strategic push toward dispatchable renewables. It features the 333 MW Dune BESS system alongside La Pampina, a co-located development pairing a 186 MW solar plant with a 175 MW BESS facility. With four-hour storage capability, the battery systems strengthen grid flexibility and deliver consistent power supply during periods of low solar production. The project’s physical footprint is striking—over 406 battery containers, more than 297,000 solar panels, and upwards of 150 transformers—illustrating the engineering scale required to support Chile’s evolving energy needs.

The energy generated from the Dune Plus portfolio is committed under a long-term agreement with Codelco, Chile’s leading state-owned mining company. The 15-year, 1,000 GWh annual supply contract ensures a stable renewable power source for one of the nation’s most critical industries. This alignment between clean energy generation and industrial demand highlights how strategic partnerships can drive both decarbonization and economic resilience. With proceeds directed exclusively toward construction, Generadora Metropolitana is accelerating a future where renewable power and energy storage play a central role in supporting national growth.

The financing secured for the Dune Plus portfolio demonstrates how coordinated investment and visionary development can reshape a country’s energy landscape. As Chile continues to scale its renewable capacity, projects like Dune Plus serve as powerful examples of innovation, reliability, and long-term sustainability.
