The shipping industry is entering a decisive chapter in its decarbonization journey, and CMA CGM has taken a bold step forward. On August 20, 2025, the global shipping giant announced a strategic move to acquire a minority stake in US-based renewable natural gas (RNG) producer Vanguard Renewables. While the deal’s financial details remain undisclosed, the implications for sustainable maritime fuel are profound. This partnership is set to reshape how CMA CGM powers its fleet, aligning with international climate targets and securing long-term access to low-carbon energy.

CMA CGM’s investment, made through its energy-focused PULSE fund, will give the company dedicated access to RNG from up to four of Vanguard’s production projects. This move supports CMA CGM’s shift from traditional LNG to bioLNG, in line with new International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions. By locking in RNG supplies, the company ensures a reliable stream of cleaner fuel for its LNG-powered vessels, which act as a transitional bridge to bioLNG adoption. For Vanguard Renewables, this collaboration validates its national growth model and strengthens its role as a supplier for hard-to-abate industries such as shipping.

Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Weston, Massachusetts, Vanguard Renewables has grown into one of the most significant RNG developers in the United States. Backed by Global Infrastructure Partners, part of BlackRock, the company operates 17 RNG facilities and is on track to commission over 100 projects by 2028. Using on-farm anaerobic digesters, Vanguard converts food, beverage, and agricultural waste into pipeline-quality RNG. With ambitions to produce 12 Bcf annually by 2029, its projects, such as Dinnerbell Farms in Wisconsin and Goodrich Family Farm in Vermont, are helping to reduce organic waste, promote regenerative agriculture, and decarbonize multiple industries.

For CMA CGM, the partnership delivers more than just a green badge—it ensures long-term, dedicated supply of RNG at scale. With Vanguard Renewables committing up to four major dairy-farm-based digestion facilities for the company, CMA CGM’s maritime operations gain stability in sourcing sustainable fuels. This move complements the shipping line’s broader decarbonization strategy, positioning RNG as a cornerstone of its energy transition while responding to the IMO’s net-zero trajectory. It’s also a signal to the shipping industry at large: strategic partnerships with energy innovators will be critical to meeting climate goals.

The CMA CGM–Vanguard Renewables alliance not only accelerates the decarbonization of global shipping but also strengthens the circular economy by turning waste into energy. As the maritime industry braces for stricter climate regulations, this partnership could set a precedent for how fuel supply chains are built for the future.
