In a defining moment for Australia’s clean energy sector, Atmos Renewables has announced the acquisition of a 76.6% stake in the 316.8 MW Hornsdale Wind Farm from Neoen, cementing its status as the sole owner of one of the country’s most iconic renewable energy assets. Already holding a 23.4% minority stake, this acquisition propels Atmos to new heights, pushing its operational portfolio beyond 1 GW for the first time. Scheduled for completion in the second half of 2025, the transaction not only signals the company’s operational maturity but also enhances its strategic positioning across Australia’s energy landscape.
Milestone Deal Fuelled by Strategic Investment and Financing
The Hornsdale acquisition is part of a broader funding and expansion strategy. In tandem with the deal, Igneo Infrastructure Partners, Atmos’s asset manager, raised A$400 million ($260.6 million) through equity co-investments from Cbus Super, MLC, and AMP Super. This capital injection, alongside extended debt funding via Atmos's existing portfolio facility, will fully fund both the Hornsdale acquisition and the Merredin BESS construction.
With assets now spanning every NEM and WEM-connected state, Atmos becomes the only owner-operator with renewable generation infrastructure across the entirety of Australia’s regulated energy markets. This move further positions the company to meet its ambitious plan to deliver over 1 GW of projects from its development pipeline within the next 2–3 years—totaling investments of around A$3 billion.
Inside Hornsdale: A Wind Giant with Stable, Long-Term Revenue
The Hornsdale Wind Farm, located in Jamestown, South Australia, is composed of three development phases totaling 316.8 MW, using Direct Drive turbine technology maintained under long-term Siemens O&M contracts. With a production output of over 400 GWh annually, it powers more than 70,000 homes and contributes significantly to grid reliability.
What sets Hornsdale apart is its robust power sales framework. The entire output is contracted under a 20-year Feed-in Tariff (FiT) agreement with the ACT Government, offering a weighted average tariff of $55.03/MWh and an average remaining contract life of 13.08 years. This provides predictable long-term cash flow, enhancing Atmos’s financial resilience and investment-grade appeal.
Atmos has also reaffirmed its commitment to community and First Nations programs, ensuring continuity in stakeholder relationships and reinforcing the project's legacy of local engagement.
