How do established renewable investors strengthen their position in an evolving energy market By stepping into fast-growing segments that complement their existing generation portfolios. That’s exactly what Asper Investment Management and the Craydel Group have done with their first-ever battery energy storage acquisition in the UK. Announced on November 21, 2025, the deal signals a meaningful expansion into storage as the sector becomes central to grid flexibility and renewable integration.

Asper and Craydel have officially entered the UK’s BESS landscape through the acquisition of LG-B-50A Limited, the Lovat Estates company that holds rights to a 49.9 MW storage project in the Scottish Highlands. The purchase, executed via Invis Energy—a joint venture between a fund managed by Asper and the Craydel Group—marks their first storage asset acquisition. Although the deal value remains undisclosed, its strategic significance is clear: the partners are positioning themselves to complement their existing renewable generation assets with flexible, dispatchable storage solutions that will play an increasingly vital role in the UK’s decarbonized power system. Burges Salmon served as legal advisor, supporting the transaction’s timely and efficient execution.

The acquired project is a 49.9 MW / 199.6 MWh BESS facility located near Beauly in the Scottish Highlands, a region known for strong renewable generation and growing grid constraints. Having secured planning permission in May 2025, the development is now in its advanced stages and positioned for upcoming construction milestones. Backed financially by Asper Iona LP, a fund managed by Asper Investment Management, the acquisition reinforces long-term investor confidence in storage as a critical tool for balancing the intermittency of wind-rich regions like Scotland. With grid reinforcement and storage demand rising, the Beauly site is well placed to serve both local and national flexibility needs.

For Asper and Craydel, this acquisition represents an important evolution in their renewable strategy. By adding battery storage to their portfolio, they gain the ability to optimize energy flows, hedge volatility, and deliver cleaner, more reliable electricity to the system. The move also supports the UK’s broader mission to scale storage capacity and ensure stability as renewable penetration grows. Invis Energy’s investment lays the foundation for future participation in UK flexibility markets while strengthening their long-term development pipeline.

The Beauly BESS acquisition marks a pivotal step for Asper and the Craydel Group as they expand into the storage segment to enhance their clean energy portfolio. With planning approvals secured and strong financial backing in place, the project is poised to contribute meaningfully to Scotland’s evolving energy landscape.
